Side Dishes For Your Main Course

Often when planning what to make for supper, the hardest part is figuring out what to go with the main meal. Sometimes we get tired of the same old meat with potato or rice and want a bit of variety with them or to try something completely different.

A good rule to follow is if the main meat of the meal is hearty, go for a lighter side. If your meat is on the light side, go with a heartier side dish.

It is not a good idea to serve more than two starchy sides with your main course. Balance it out with at least one or two vegetable dishes. Ideally, you want your supper to include 1 meat (or protein alternative), 1 starchy side (and you can even include bread or rolls as a second starch), and 1 vegetable (or a stewed fruit) with something to drink on the side. With this generation used to being exposed to restaurant show-off sizes, you may be surprised what a real healthy portion of all this would be on a plate. A serving of meat is no bigger than a playing card deck. A serving of starch and vegetable is approximately 2 tablespoons. And a good serving of bread would be 2 slices or 1 roll. Anything more is overkill.
