Naan Bread Recipe
Tasty Indian Bread
- 2/3 cup warm water
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon white sugar
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup ghee
- 2 tablespoons plain yoghurt
- 2 teaspoons onion seed
Mix the warm water (make sure it is not hot!!) with yeast and sugar until the yeast is dissolved. Cover and let it stand for 10 minutes in a warm place.
Sift flour and salt into a large bowl. Add yeast mixture, 1/8 cup of the ghee and yogurt. Mix into a soft dough.
Knead on a floured surface until dough is smooth and elastic. Place in a large greased bowl. Cover and let stand for 1 1/2 hours in a warm place. By this time the dough should be doubled in size.
Punch dough down and knead for 5 minutes then divide dough into 6 pieces. Roll each piece out into 8 inch round naans.
Use a well seasoned cast iron frying pan with low sides. Liberally oil the pan and turn the stove on medium high. Brush each naan with the remaining ghee and sprinkle on the onion seeds. Place in pan and fry for about 2 minutes on each side. It should be slightly puffed and brown.
Serve with any Indian dinner or use it as a bread alternative for a sandwich.
