Gevalia Coffee
Once Your Try It Free, You'll Never Go Back
The story of Gevalia (Juh-vol-ya) began in 1853 in the tiny seaport of Gavle (Yev-lay), Sweden where Victor Theodor Engwall founded an importing company which he dedicated to searching the world for coffee varieties that had yet to be discovered and offering them to the discerning Europeans of his day.
By the beginning of the 19th century, coffee had become a Swedish national passion and was as important to them as wine is to the French, or tea is to the English. Rapidly, Engwall's customers were becoming avid coffee drinkers -- and it's not difficult to understand why he became obsessed with the idea of producing the perfect cup of coffee. As a coffee merchant with rare dedication to his craft and a personal taste for fine coffee, he began experimenting -- combining different beans, roasting and grinding the beans in various ways, and tasting endless cups of coffee daily to develop a uniquely perfect coffee blend.
Some years after this quest for perfection began, it is said that King Gustav of Sweden, on a sailing excursion in the Baltic, was lured into the port of Gavle by the inviting aroma of Gevalia. The King was so taken by the smooth, full-bodied taste of Gevalia that he appointed Gevalia coffee purveyor to His Majesty and the Royal Court of Sweden. Gevalia is the best-loved coffee of Sweden and generations of Swedish kings have given it their royal seal.
Through the years that followed, Mr. Engwall's sons and grandsons carried on the devotion to high quality coffee. To this day, Gevalia is still made in Gavle by experts in blending and roasting - the most critical part of making good coffee. And Gevalia's exclusive Master Taster, Willy Pettersson, ensures that only the finest coffee beans are chosen for Gevalia coffees. This remarkable coffee has become the gold standard in the United States, where it was introduced in 1983. In a short amount of time, Gevalia has established itself as a top super premium coffee in the United States. Gevalia believes that, once a customer experiences Gevalia, they will become as loyal to Gevalia coffee as the Swedes have been for well over 100 years.
